About this debate

Ask ten different countries who makes the best music on the continent and you'll get eleven answers, most of them delivered with zero room for debate. Africa doesn't have one music scene — it has dozens, each with its own drum pattern, slang, and absolute certainty that everyone else is just remixing what they started first.

Nigeria's sound has spent the last decade turning into a genuine global export, filling stadiums and playlists well outside the continent. Ghana will remind you, patiently and often, that the grooves Nigeria built on didn't come from nowhere — its own scene has been shaping West African pop for generations. Meanwhile South Africa's house-rooted sound has quietly become the thing everyone else is trying to catch up to, propelled by a rhythm section that does more talking than most choruses.

Further out, the arguments get even more interesting. Central Africa's guitar-driven dance sound has been the backbone of popular music across the continent for decades, long before anyone was calling anything else global. East Africa brings its own fast-talking, fast-moving scenes, built for freestyles and street credibility as much as airplay. And across the Sahel, from Senegal's percussion-heavy dance music to Mali's deep griot storytelling tradition, there's a case that the real foundations of African music were laid long before any of this was a hashtag.

Ten countries, one aux cord, and absolutely no chance everyone leaves this debate agreeing. Pick the sound you'd defend at full volume.
