About this debate

Few arguments in sports have been fought as hard, for as long, with as little resolution, as this one. Two players, one era, and a debate that has outlasted several of the teams they've played for.

Messi built his reputation as a dribbler and playmaker first — a player who could slow a game down to his own pace, thread a pass through players who weren't sure he could see them, and still finish the move himself if nobody else did. He came up through Barcelona's academy and spent the bulk of his career there before later playing in France and the United States, and he eventually won the one trophy his critics loved to point out he hadn't — a World Cup with Argentina. Along the way he picked up more Ballon d'Or awards than anyone else in the game's history.

Ronaldo built his case on the other end of the same sport: relentless goal-scoring, elite athleticism, and a work ethic that's become as much a part of his reputation as the goals themselves. He went from Sporting CP's academy to Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and beyond, winning league titles across England, Spain, and Italy along the way and becoming one of the most prolific scorers the game has ever produced — collecting a stack of Ballon d'Or awards of his own in the process.

Which one is actually the greatest of all time depends entirely on what you think "greatest" means — vision or volume, the player who makes the game easier for everyone else or the one who makes it look hardest on himself. Neither argument is wrong. Pick your GOAT.
